Making, Doing & Thinking..

It's our final night in Queensland, our suitcase is packed and I've been reflecting on what an extraordinary 16 months it has been.  So much has happened and in some moments, it all feels like a surreal dream of sorts.

I'm really looking forward to Autumn, to reconnecting with the seasons.  And then there's a new nest to feather and new daily rhythms to find.

I've got a total girl crush on the fabulous Alys Fowler and can't believe it's taken me so long to find the gorgeous series, The Edible Garden.  I've been watching them on repeat, taking notes, adoring her gorgeous style, simplicity and amazing garden. So very inspiring!

I'm on the lookout for styling ideas.. I'm loving this map and am inspired by these fairy lights and this gorgeous family home. And this looks like a great e-course to get my decorating ideas flowing.

I'm thinking one of our first DIYs for our new home is going to be this seriously ingenious fold away bed. So clever!

I've got my eye on this dress, these sneakers and am on the lookout for a cardigan like this for Autumn and I can't wait to make this jam, these lotion bars and this slice..

We won't have the internet connected for until late next week, which in hindsight might just be a lovely time to take a step back and have a little blogging holiday. It's been a little while since I had some time away from the computer and I always think it does me the world of good to switch off, go outside and enjoy the beauty of our new (old) town.  I will still be around on Instagram and can't wait to come back in the second week of March and share photos of our new nest and our exciting decorating and gardening plans.

Here's to exciting times ahead.
 Have a beautiful week!

February Seven Vignettes..

Before the month is over I thought I'd share my February seven vignettes.  Looking back on them now, there were so many emotions involved in making this series.  I created these the week we were packing up most of the house ready for Ben to drive to Mildura.  So each vignette was created was made using what was at hand, the tiny bits and pieces I could scavenge and easily transport with me.  The bottle that features throughout the series was a sweet gift from the lovely Pia.  Each vignette is its own little love story, a touch of whimsy romance in this month of love.

Day 1 - Love. Inspired by an old world love found within well worn novel pages..

Day 2 - Purple. Inspired by film royalty & the old days of Broadway.

Day 3 - Water. Inspired by tales of the sea & the love story of the seamstress and the lighthouse keeper.

Day 4 - Handwritten. Inspired by a nearly 100 year old love letter, found in a suitcase in a little antique shop. Its recipient, My dear little Rose. Its sender, Your ever true Stan. And its contents, a reminder to follow your heart against all odds.

Day 5 - American. Inspired by the romance of Autumn in New York.

Day 5 - Local. Inspired by a little nest left in my garden by a local feathered friend.

Day 7 - Heart. Inspired by my heart's affection, the love of my life.

I really enjoyed the challenge of styling with what was at hand.  Wisps of flowers, vintage lace, old postcards and raw silk scarves from my wardrobe became the backdrop for my story telling.  My favourite day, well I can't go past Day seven, which I created just after Ben drove out of the driveway heading for our new home. There were definitely a few tears whilst piecing this one together.  My other favourite was day three, inspired by a story I began to write a few years back.

Looking forward to the next round beginning on Saturday! My goodness this month has flown by!

Baking - Spiced Pear Muffins..

Over the past week I've been clearing out the last bits and pieces from my pantry ready for our move. I've also been trading my parents baked treats and homemade bread in exchange for some yummy dinners.  It's a win win and it has made evenings a whole lot easier for Tallow and I when I haven't had to think about cooking.  Yesterday I had some pears that needed using, so I made up a quick batch of these spiced pear muffins for afternoon tea inspired by Maggie Beer's spiced pear paste.  I'd forgotten how wonderful and comforting a homemade muffin is and these were so simple, I must remember to make them again.

Spiced Pear Muffins
adapted from Rhonda Hatzel's lovely recipe - makes 12

3 ripe pears
1/2 cup of olive oil
3/4 cup of milk
1/2 cup of sugar
2 cups self-raising flour
cinnamon to taste

Preheat oven to 180°C and butter a muffin tin
Peel and cut pears and stew in a small amount of water and cinnamon until tender.
Mix oil, egg, milk and sugar in a bowl until well combined.
Add flour and mix gently, then fold in pears and cooking liquid.
Once mixture is just combined, spoon batter into muffin tin and sprinkle with a little more cinnamon
Bake for about 20 mins and serve warm with butter and a pot of tea.

What have you been baking lately?

PS. I've been inspired to try a vegan muffin mix next, I'll let you know how it goes.

Making, Doing & Thinking..

'A weekly document of little thoughts that dance around my head at 3am.'

It's been a strange week being surrounded by the last of our boxes, waiting for everything to come together to begin our next adventure.  While in limbo, it's been a great opportunity to really focus on what I want for our future and realising how I can make that a reality.

Although I don't watch much TV, I'm enjoying catching up on episodes of The Block right now.  I'm always fascinated by the design process and love seeing how the rooms come together.

I'm wishing I was in Sydney to check out all the fabulousness that is Life Instyle.  I love writing for the Life Instyle blog each month and can't wait to share some of my favourite Australian textile designers soon.  The new Bonnie and Neil collection is just incredible and I'm also loving Jason Grant's daily slices of gorgeous design on Instagram

I've finally got around to using Evernote and oh my what a life changer.  I'm feeling so excited to begin to put all my words into one place and start to make sense of all my ramblings. While there is nothing like good old journaling, when I'm up at 3am, it's the best.

My other favourite tool to keep me going at 3am has to be Pinterest.  It never fails to ignite my creativity, especially at the moment as I dream up ideas for our new home.

I've been thinking a whole lot lately about ethical fashion and lifestyle choices and really working hard to find alternative choices for products I used to so easily pop out to the shops and buy.  Right now I'm on the hunt for ethical jeans as I think about the lovely upcoming Autumn weather in Mildura. There is a much bigger blog post about this topic that I will get around to writing one day when I can collect all my thoughts in one spot, as well as a long list of links and interesting websites I've been coming across.

I'm loving this fabulous new project by Hailey Bartholomew, it's so great to see amazing people getting out there and really making changes in the world.

I'm also super excited to see my inspiring friend, Luisa Brimble passionately pursuing her dream of Alphabet Family Journal.  It's sure to be an amazing magazine, so be sure to stop by and show your support for this wonderful project.

It may sound silly but I'm really looking forward to wearing real shoes again. I've spent most of the summer barefoot and I just can't wait to tie up a pair of pretty oxfords and wander through the Autumn leaves.

I'm eager to try this recipe, frame this quote for my wall, find a pair of jeans like this and try my hand at a macrame wall hanging (I can't get this one out of my head).

And do yourself a favour and stop by my beautiful friend Pia's blog and listen to the incredible song she has recently composed.  Truly magical!

Home is never far from my mind at the moment, what it means, the making of it and why it feels so important to create a place to be together and grow as a family.

Wishing you a beautiful weekend!
Much Love

Four Months..

Dearest Tallow,

You turned four months nearly two weeks ago and I'm only just writing this post. It has been a busy start to the year indeed! You've grown up so much my little possum, everyday you become more a little girl.  The day Aunty Phoe and I took this photo of you, you were in the funniest mood, pulling faces and trying to escape off the chair. So here you are at four months, cheeky as ever, ready to explore.  You've been through an epic wonder week and have learnt so much! You're rolling over like a pro and are trying with all your might to start crawling.  You love to dance, sing, crinkle up your nose and poke your tongue out, especially at strangers. Everyone loves your hair and I'm almost certain it grows an inch everyday. We are about to embark on our first big family adventure and your first ride on a plane. I can't wait to get settled into our new home and decorate your big girl room with a teepee for us to play in. Oh Miss Tallow you are such a character and you bring a burst of sunshine to everyday!

You Like:
Splashing in the bath
Chewing anything you can get your hands on
Your toes
Pulling Daddy's beard

You Dislike:
Getting bored
Waiting for anything
The car (but you are getting better at short trips)

We love you more and more every moment!
Happy Valentine's Day precious girl.

The Winds of Change..

The winds of change are here..  Since the start of the year there's been something in the air that has been calling me to once again to focus to the horizon and navigate the course of our dreams.  It began when we started to declutter and simply our lives.  We spoke about what we wanted in our world and where we were headed next.  While we love the lifestyle of the Sunshine Coast there has been something missing. It just hasn't feel like home, not the way Mildura did for the past four years.  We began to talk about what home was to us, why it was important and how we might find it again. One word just kept singing true and that was community, something we realised we have been longing for and missing since our move back to Queensland.

The last year and a half has been some of the most amazing months of our lives. A time to find our feet again, to heal and most of all to bring a our beautiful Tallow into the world. But the one thing that has been missing for us, is a true place to call home. So in the same week as we began to think about where to next, searching for work far and wide, an amazing job opportunity arose for Ben back in Mildura.  We could only take it to be a sign, that it was time to return, to reconnect and start a new, in the same town but as very different people to the grieving couple who fled in the Spring of 2012.

We left our little town in haste, in despair, searching for some sunshine to light our darkest moments.  We needed family and a place to hide away and shelter the storm. After we lost Cohen, I just wanted to disappear and never be seen again.  I couldn't bring myself to face the world, not even those closest to me. But as we have had time to heal and once again find joy in our lives, I finally feel like I can face that part of my life. I know it is time to open the doors to my heart again, to let the light in, the community and beautiful people I cherish.  There are many conversations to have, stories to share and friendships to mend and I now know I have the strength to begin.

So once again our little wandering family is packing up, ready for the next part of our adventure.  A fresh start, in a place we have grown to love so dearly and somewhere we can truly call home.  Ben is already on the road with our lives packed up into a trailer, while Tallow, Jack, Olive and I eagerly wait to find a little home to move into (hopefully next week).  The whole process has happened in a matter of weeks and emotions have been running so high.  But as the dust settles and the reality of the move sinks in, I'm excited to see what unfolds for us.

Things may be a little more quiet than usual around here for a few weeks (as they have been this week), while I finish the last of the packing and prepare for our departure. I've seen enough moving boxes to last me a lifetime, but each day I'm working to find the positives and embracing the excitement of the journey ahead. Thank goodness for our amazing parents, without them none of this would be possible.

In some ways, the last year two years of my life seem totally surreal and yet hidden within it all, I've found out what I'm really made of.  The quote, 'grow where you are planted' continues to resonate as I take this next step with my little family to begin this new chapter.

Making & Doing..

'A weekly document of little thoughts that dance around my head at 3am.'

There's a change in the air and we are embracing every moment. (More about our new adventures soon)

I'm dreaming up plans for a new website and an exciting new side project and reminding myself to take my time and be patient (I get a bit enthusiastic and want everything to be finished immediately.)

I'm enjoying the new season of River Cottage to the Core and thinking about making my own preserves this season.

I'm adding chia seeds to everything and think it's high time we grew our own. And speaking of chia seeds I really want to try this recipe.

I'm thinking about this crazy caper that is social media and how I fit into it all these days.  I'm interested in reading others perspectives and am always thinking about what might happen next in the world of blogging and Instagram. Right now I've decided I love them both, but have noticed that my priorities are changing and that savouring the joys of everyday life is what's making my heart sing right now.

I'm currently in the midst of seven vignettes and there are strange little clusters of flowers, doilies and ephemera dotting the house.

I'm doing a little happy dance that Miss Tallow is nearly finished her wonder week (more like wonder month) and is back to her normal sleeping routine after a week of unsettled nights.

We've been planning the Autumn/Winter collection for Wilde Asher and I'm so excited to begin creating samples.  We've got some new designs in store and can't wait to start work on our new homewares collection.

I'm enjoying making up some pretty packages to send to some lovely blogging friends.

I'm itching to try a new craft and I'm thinking pottery might be fun. I'm also keen to really fire up my sewing machine and work on a few skirts for Autumn.

Kate's beautiful crochet blanket is inspiring me to pick up my hook and commit to a blanket project in Autumn.

I'm still in love with kilim rugs and I'm hoping one with serendipitously enter my life in the near future.

This week I'm inspired by this article, this pantry and this gorgeous blog post

Wishing you a beautiful and inspired week!
